What Do Colors Mean?

You see colors in everything around you, every moment of the day—but do you ever stop to think about the impact each of those colors is having on you? Colors can be a powerful tool—if you know how to use them. You might immediately think of branding elements like the logo, business cards and stationery. Color choices will also be meaningful across online communication and marketing materials: your website, social media, emails, presentations as well as offline tools like flyers and product packaging. Millions of years of biological conditioning have created certain associations between colors and objects or emotions, while some associations may be more recent. Feelings are much more powerful than rational thoughts based on facts and figures and applying color meanings and color symbolism will make your branding efforts and designs much more effective.

Is colour just a physiological phenomenon? Does colour have an effect on feelings? This study argues that the meaning of colour, like language, lies in the particular historical contexts in which it is experienced. Three essays introduce the subject, and the remaining chapters follow themes of colour chronologically, from the early Middle Ages to the 20th century. Topics covered include medieval colour-symbolism, the earliest history of the prism, Newton's optical discoveries, 19th-century psychologists and colour, and 20th-century literature on colour in art. He was an authority on the work of J. Turner about which he wrote three books and edited a collection of the artist's letters. John Gage was born in Bromley ,  Kent, on 28 June , the son of an accountant. He was educated at Rye Grammar School and then at The Queen's College , University of Oxford, from where he graduated with a third class degree in modern history. Gage's early career was teaching English in Florence while he studied Italian art. After he returned to England, he taught in art schools, including the Royal College of Art.
