Antarctic Book of Cooking & Cleaning, The – Kitchen Arts & Letters

Those of you who've read PGM for years now will remember this book from Volume 3 —we shared a sneak peek into the book thanks to the authors, which at the time was not yet published. I waited with baited breath for the book to go to print, as I knew the result would be so lovely. And lovely it certainly is especially since Carol and Wendy's hard work is so nicely presented as the book was designed by an award winning design firm in Toronto, The Office of Gilbert Li. As you may have guessed by the title, this is no ordinary book. I have to admit, the title both confounded and intrigued me at first, which of course meant that I had to learn more.

With Antarctic adventure tourism company owner Sam Blyth, Devine created VIEW as a venue for volunteer visitors to participate in environmental cleanup. MEN WANTED for hazardous journey, small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful, honor and recognition in case of success. Among the responses was one from a young woman named Peggy Pergrine, writing on behalf of a female trio:. We are … willing to undergo any hardships that you yourselves undergo. If our feminine garb is inconvenient, we should just love to don masculine attire… We do not see why men should have all the glory … especially when there are women just as brave and capable. Whether the great explorer and his crew survived by merit or miracle remains unknown, but survive they did — however narrowly — not without attention to cuisine.

This offbeat account of an effort to clean up a Russian research station in Antarctica is a testament to the power of food to connect people from a wide range of backgrounds.
